Tipperary Travel to Face Rebels in Allianz League Opener

On Saturday, Tipperary will take their first foray into Division Two since 2010 when Liam Kearns’ men travel to the newly refurbished Paírc Uí Chaoimh for the opening round of the 2018 Allianz Leagues.

Allianz National Football League Division Two

The promises to be a historic occasion as it will be the very first time that the Cork seniors will have played a competitive game in the rebuilt arena and a large crowd is expected as their hurlers take on Brian Cody’s Kilkenny straight after at 7pm.

While Tipperary and Cork have met twice in recent years in the championship, it will be the first occasion that they will have crossed swords in the leagues since October 1997 when the Rebels recorded a facile victory in the Clonmel Sports Grounds winning out 4-17 to 3-5. By the opening quarter of that occasion there was little indication of the gulf in class as Declan Browne helped himself to 1-2 to leave two points separating the sides. However, from here on in Cork pulled away with Mark O’ Sullivan impressing in the forwards bagging a personal tally of 2-3. One of the few bright sparks for Tipperary on what was a gloomy occasion was the performance of Brendan Cummins who won a lot of breaking ball around the middle of the park and scored a superb goal.

Things however, in recent times have been a lot closer between the two. Tipperary famously overcame Cork in 2016 when two late Kevin O Halloran frees earned the Premier their first win over the Rebels in 72 years while last year saw Cork avenge that result scoring a dramatic late goal through Luke Connolly to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, 1-10 1-9

Liam Kearns will be anxious to ensure that we do not suffer the same fate as in 2010 when Tipperary, despite some fine performances, were sent straight back down to Division Three. In an interview with the Tipperary Star’s Brian McDonnell, the Kerry native stressed that Tipperary’s main goal will be “to consolidate our position in division two”. We wish our senior footballers every success as they embark on their 2018 journey.
